Sterling Silver Value Calculator — Estimate 925 Melt Value

Estimate the metal content value of solid silver using its weight, purity and a spot price you supply. Prices are not fetched live here; enter your current USD price per troy ounce.

Calculate silver content value

The calculation

Silver content value = weight in grams ÷ 31.1034768 × purity × spot price per troy ounce. If your weight is already in troy ounces, omit the grams conversion.

A worked sterling example

For 100 grams of solid 925 silver and an illustrative price of $30 per troy ounce, the estimate is 100 ÷ 31.1034768 × 0.925 × 30 = $89.22. The $30 input is a worked example, not today’s market price.

Measure the silver-bearing parts

Exclude removable stones and non-silver components where possible. Weighted bases, filled handles and knives with steel blades can make total object weight misleading. If you cannot establish metal weight, treat the calculation as uncertain rather than a quote.

Troy ounces are different from ordinary ounces

Precious-metal spot prices use troy ounces, each equal to approximately 31.1035 grams. An ordinary weight ounce is approximately 28.3495 grams. If your scale shows “oz” without specifying troy, select grams instead to avoid using the wrong unit.

Melt estimate versus resale value

The calculator multiplies metal content by a supplied spot price. A buyer’s offer may deduct refining costs, fees and margin. A collectible object may instead be valued for its design, maker, condition and provenance. The result does not predict an auction price or guarantee a payout.

Not sure about purity? Start with the 925 marks guide and hallmark identification checklist. Do not apply the solid-silver calculation to a plated object’s full weight.
